----- Rome, Italy --------------- Our final stop on our 3 week trip was Roma. Rome as we call it was the most historically interesting of all cities that we had visited in Europe. The city not only plays host to many world renown monuments, but is incredibly beautiful with parks and trees everywhere. My favorite place was the Palatino. I loved the peaceful ruins with the many wonderful views of Rome. In such a short period of time we covered many places including the Coloseum, Forum, Vittoriano, Spanish Steps, Fountain of Trevi, the Pantheon, and the Bocca di Verita. We had visited the Vatican as well, but that is in its own area of the site. I wished that I only had more time in this amazing city with so much to offer. The dining in Rome was excellent. We found a restaurant near our hotel called Nuova Stella. This restaurant had the best restaurant food that we had eaten in Europe. Not only was the food great, but also the service here was like service that you expect in the States. In general Europe has crappy service at restaurants evidently due to no tipping. Although our waiter did not expect a tip we felt obligated to tip him on his wonderful service. We continued to eat here 2 more times and were warmly welcomed back and treated even better. Getting around Rome is a breeze via the Metro. The Metro takes you directly to all major tourist sites, so no rental car or bus is needed. Rome was pretty clean in comparison to other Italian cities. The drinking water in the many fountains was clean, cool and refreshing and cut down on buying expensive bottled water. A return to Rome is a must in the future to see what I had missed on this trip.
