----- Granada, Spain --------------- Granada is a city situated in south central Spain hugging the Sierra Nevadas. Granada is located in a valley surrounded by hills and mountains, which contributes to bad air quality in town. That was my one complaint about this city. The air was very smoggy. I would not want to stay too long in such an environment. However, our drive from Malaga along the mediterranean coast through the mountains was amazing. I remember these deep mountain passes with vegetation hanging down cliffs and waterfalls right along the highway. I would have taken pictures, but I was driving so I couldn't. :-( Despite the pollution, Granada is home to the most amazing palace that I had visited in Europe...the Alhambra Palace. The Moors, utilizing beautiful Moorish and Islamic architecture, built Alhambra Palace. The Koran is written throughout the palace, and the original reason for building this palace was to experience paradise on Earth. Beautiful gardens with fountains can be found everywhere. In fact water was the theme in the Alhambra Palace construction. Everywhere you turn you will find flowing water and its gentle sound combined with the beautifully decorated walls will remove any thoughts about the world outside the palace. Yes, there is not one wall lacking detail. Detail and art is king in Alhambra. Being that the palace was constructed by devout Muslims and there work was dedicated to their god, it's no wonder that when you see this palace you don't see a palace, you see a work of art. Alhambra is situated above the city with cleaner air conditions. Beautiful towers that are accessible to visitors make for great photo opportunities. If you visit Spain, I highly recommend taking a day to go to Granada and visit Alhambra Palace. Be warned that it is best to get here early, as tickets need to be purchased. The lines can be long and only so many people are allowed in during a session.
